Nordson Corporation Donates Historic Rail Cars to Lake Shore Railway Association

October 28, 2014

Gift will help illustrate historical significance of rail in Lorain County; continue legacy of Nordson co-founder Evan Nord

Amherst, Ohio, USA – October 28, 2014 – Nordson Corporation (Nasdaq: NDSN) is pleased to announce it has donated three historic rail cars to the Lake Shore Railway Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public on the importance and significance of railroading in the region, past and present.

“We thank Nordson for the gift of these cars which are significant historical artifacts and a treasure for Lorain County,” said Jack Siffert, President of the Lake Shore Railway Association.  “Our intent is to refurbish the cars so that they may eventually operate on the six mile Lorain & West Virginia Railway, which begins operation at the Lorain County Fairgrounds in Wellington, Ohio and is currently owned by the Lake Shore Railway Association.  We also see opportunities for the cars to be part of trips sponsored by other rail preservation organizations.  The use of these cars will provide valuable opportunities to help children and adults appreciate the importance of rail transportation in the development of our region.”

“We are pleased that these historic cars will be restored and, more importantly, and as a continuing testament to Nordson co-founder Evan Nord’s legacy in Lorain County, will be used to help educate people about the significance of railroads in the history of Northeast Ohio,” said Doug Bloomfield, Vice President of Nordson Corporation.  “This is a unique way of giving something back to the community in addition to the many traditional charitable causes we support every year.”

The cars currently reside outside the historic Nordson Depot in Amherst, Ohio where they were brought by Nordson Corporation co-founder Evan Nord in the 1970’s.  Originally a stop on the Junction Railroad, later know as the Cleveland and Toledo Railroad, the Nordson Depot today functions as a meeting place for charitable functions.  Current plans call for the cars to be moved from the Depot to the Ohio Locomotive Works facility in Lorain, Ohio where they will be restored before eventually being transported to their new home in Wellington, Ohio.

“Our goal is to have at least one car in service in time for the 2015 Lorain County Fair, at which time we would recognize Nordson for its generosity,” added Siffert.  “Our train boards at the Fairgrounds Road entrance and is in operation every day of the fair, ensuring the cars would be seen by tens of thousands of people. Future plans involve working with the Lorain County Metro Parks on establishing a bike path on the side of the rail right-of-way. This will offer a major increase in ridership of the railroad as well as showcasing the cars to an even greater audience.”
